A letter to keep

4 MINUTES READ

Your baby's first Christmas
a letter for later.

Your baby won’t remember their first Christmas. Not the lights, not the wrapping paper, not who held them first. A letter is how they’ll know.

Write it tonight, while the wrapping paper is still on the floor: where you were, who held them, the one moment you’ll want them to know about.

What to write in a first Christmas letter

Start with their name and the date. Then choose two or three details that belong to your family:

Three short first Christmas letter examples

These are invented examples, not real families' memories. Borrow the shape, then replace the details with your own. You can write to a son, daughter or simply to your baby; their name is enough.

A quiet Christmas at home
Dear Sam, your first Christmas was mostly spent in my arms. We stayed home, rang Nana and sang the same song until you smiled. I thought I would write about the presents, but what I want to keep is the weight of you asleep against me. I am so glad you are here. Love, Mum.

A busy family Christmas
Dear Ada, today you watched your cousins dance and gave Grandad your biggest grin. Everyone wanted a turn holding you. By the afternoon, we slipped into the quiet room for a cuddle. That was my favourite part: all our family nearby, and a few minutes with just you. Happy first Christmas, little one. Love, Dad.

When the day did not go to plan
Dear Robin, our first Christmas together was a tired one. We missed the family photo and your festive outfit stayed in the drawer. But you smiled at me while I changed you, and for a moment the whole day felt lighter. You never had to make this Christmas perfect. I loved being with you. All my love.

Make the letter sound like you

Read it aloud. If a sentence sounds like something you would never say, change it. A nickname you use every day can mean more than a grand opening. Leave in the ordinary details: the song on repeat, the borrowed chair, the visit that ran late.

If you feel stuck, finish this sentence: This Christmas, I want to remember you… Then add why that moment mattered. Stop there if that is enough.

Keep it somewhere you can find next year

Add the year and your baby's age. Keep the letter with a photo, in a notebook or in a folder you can find again. If you write digitally, keep a separate copy too.

Next Christmas you can write another, but there is no need to promise a tradition now. This year's letter already has a purpose: giving your child a small view of life with you before they could remember it themselves.

One every Christmas

Write one each year and something quietly remarkable happens. By the time they’re grown, there’s a small stack of letters, one for every Christmas of their childhood, each in the voice of who you were that year.

Keep them with the rest of their story: the small lines from ordinary days, the monthly letters, the book of each year. Christmas is one evening. The letter is how it stays.

Start with the memory you have today.

One Little Line keeps each memory with the date and your baby's age. Your family can add their own memories too, and your memories become a letter about the month. A quiet moment from December is enough to begin.

Questions parents ask

What should I write in a first Christmas letter to my baby?

Include the date, your baby's age, where you spent Christmas and one small moment you want to keep. Finish with something you love about them or look forward to sharing. A few honest sentences are enough.

How long should a baby's first Christmas letter be?

There is no required length. A short paragraph can hold the setting, a memory and a loving closing. Write more if you want to, but you do not need to fill a page.

Can I write the letter after Christmas?

Yes. Write it when you have a quiet moment, even if that is weeks later. Include the Christmas year and the details you remember; do not worry about recreating the whole day.
